Why set goals?

You set goals so you and your staff are challenged to grow your business. Businesses that don't grow will parish. So you need to grow your business in a controlled manor so it has a future. Setting smart goals can help your business grow.

What is a smart Goal?

A smart goal is one that is specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and timely. These are the types of goals that you can reach when you take action. These are not pie in the sky or unrealistic goals.

Specific

By specific I mean these goals are detailed enough that everyone understands exactly what it means. Here is where you answer the: who is involved; what is the goal; where does the goal take place; when do you want to reach the goal; which requirements must be met; and why the goal – be specific in your reasons.

Measurable

You have a specific goal but how will you measure it. How will you know when you have reached the goal. Without being able to measure the results of your action, you will never know if and when you have reached your goal.

Attainable

Have you ever set a goal and realized after a lot of effort that you have set an impossible goal? This happens more often than you may realize. But what you need is an attainable goal.

This does not mean you set easy goals. Your goals should be attainable but not necessarily easy to attain. Just don't make them impossible to reach.

Realistic

In the time allowed for reaching the goal, can the goal be attained with the budget restrictions your business has? Or have you set a goal that no matter how hard you work to reach it, no one will reach the goal.

Don't necessarily make your goals easy to reach. Then you are not stretching you and your staff. Goals should be reachable within the constraints of your business but should not be easy or no improvements will be made.

Timely

In the life of all businesses timing is important. And in looking forward to growing your business over the next year, your goals need to be timely. Don't skip steps in the growth of your business. But also don't set goals that you business is not prepared to go after.

Timely goals are very important to your business growth. If you rush too far ahead your goal will not be timely and will not be met.

Goal Setting

Every business should at least once a year set goals for the next year. It is important to your business (off line or online) to have a set of smart goals. And now that you have those smart goals, take action. Without action these smart goals are worthless to your business.
