What is a local business search?

When someone in your geographic area is searching for your type of business or products, they are doing a local business search.

How does someone complete a local business search?

In times gone bye they would look in the phone book or yellow pages.  They would listen to ads on TV and radio.  They would read the ads in the newspaper.

Today over 70% of Americans are on the Internet.  And today over 60% of buyers are doing research on businesses and products online.  They are completing that research before they visit the business online or off line.  So you need to be found online and around your city or they will find your competition.

So how do I get my business found online?

There are several steps:

  • You need a web site.  People can't find you online if you are not online.
  • You need copy on your site optimized to the keywords your customers would use to search for you.  Keywords are the terms someone types into the search box of their favorite search engine.  So you need to create a list of these keywords and then use them in you copy.
  • Your copy needs to be appropriate for your business and useful to the readers.  It needs to be full of benefits to those readers.  You need to answer the question – what's in it for me (me the reader).
  • Add your city/location to the title of each page of copy.  Place the city/location before or after the keywords.  Vary this placement between different pages of copy.
  • Now you need to send traffic to your specific pages of copy.  You can do this with ads, articles and other traffic generating methods.
  • Place a free ad on Google, Bing and Yahoo Local Business Centers

What should be my goal for my web site?

Your goal will vary depending upon your business.  But in general your goal should include acquiring new prospects and converting them into paying customers.  And you can reach that goal with both online and off line methods.

Remember the searchers will find you or your competition.  And you can't afford today to let your competition be found.
