So Where Do You Start?

Start by thinking of search terms that your visitors would use to find your site.  Then test each one to be sure the results are in your niche.  Use 1 or more words as a search phrase.  Once you have these phrases you are ready to determine how tough the competition is for that phrase.

Competition

There is always competition for keywords that give results.  But how tough is it for you to rank on the first page?  Using tools like WebCcomp Analyst can make your work easier.  But you will still do a lot of work to find the best phrases.

Once you have the phrases, start to use them in posts and pages.

There are multiple ways to use the best keywords for your website.  I was recently reminded of some of the 5 best ways to use them.

First and for most use them in your headline and anchor text.  This is the most important place to use your keywords.

Other places to use them is in your content.  Be sure your content is readable.  So don't use them too often.

Use targeted keywords everywhere they will fit.  And that includes in your URL if possible.

Website SEO – Keywords

Keywords are the key to being found online. You must find the best keywords to use for your website, each page and each post. Then you must use them in the title, tags and body of the page or post.

Keywords are really important but your content is too. So use the keyword or keyword phrase as often as you can in text but it must be easily readable by your human visitors. If to stuff the keywords into the text such that it is difficult to read and comprehend, you will lose ranking.

So use the keyword or phrase when it fits easily into the sentence you are writing. If it doesn't fit, don't use it.

What are keywords anyway?

Keywords or keyword phrases are those terms that your ideal customer will type into their favorite search engine hoping to find your website. So you need to think like your ideal customer and determine what search terms they would use.

Then you need to find out if anyone uses those terms and if they do what do they find. I have certainly thought that a term would be perfect for my site but when I search with it, the results had nothing to do with my site. So I droped that keyword from my list.

You can use any number of free keyword tools to find out how often the term is actually searched with. My favorite is the Wordtracker Free Keyword Suggestion Tool.

Most of the keyword tools will give you other ideas for keywords. Just be sure the results are the type you want to be in.
