There are many ways to manage your online reputation.  I like to use the CPR method.

Create

First you must create a reputation.  This takes time and a fair amount of effort.  But once it is created you must protect it.

Protect

How do you protect it?  First you must find out what is being said about you online.  So to protect your reputation you must be able to find all the negative comments about your reputation.  Then you must respond to any negative comments.

Respond

In an ideal world you would never need to respond to negative comments.  That’s because in an ideal world there would not be any negative comments.  Well back here in reality there are negative comments.  Remember you cannot please everyone but you do have the ability to respond to negative comments.  And the purpose of the response is to set the record straight with facts.

Blog Post

Recently I read a blog post by Robert Siciliano.  His post on Blog Talk Radio is titled 10 Ways to Manage Your Online Social Media Reputation.  You should read it.

Reputation management is made up of three parts – Create, Protect and Repair.  You need to create your reputation first.  Build a positive online reputation and the protect (monitor) it.  You need to monitor it so you can respond to “bad press” and repair your reputation.

Reputation Management

I recently was reading an article the brings home the importance of your reputation online.  And this reputation consists of not only what you have said and done but also what others have said about you.

Do you know what others have said about you online?  One way to find out is to Google yourself.  Only about 42% of us Americans have done that.  What are the rest of us thinking?

Do you realize that according to a recent survey:  While those of us in the US may not be Googling ourselves, the Human Resources industry is picking up the slack. According to the survey, 79 percent of US hiring personnel say they review online information about job applicants, and 70 percent admit to rejecting candidates based on what they’ve found. Those numbers drop dramatically for each of the other countries surveyed, with France the most different: Only 23% of recruiters there review online information, and only 14% have rejected candidates.

Think about this before you apply for another job.
